Zuneta: a village tries to reclaim itself

In late August, FFIPPie Jara visited Zuneta, a village under imminent threat of forced expulsion and takeover through settlers.

Zuneta is located in the South Hebron Hills, at the very southern point of the West Bank. The inhabitants were forcibly displaced in November, after years of harassment and violence through settlers and IOF soldiers.

There isn’t much of a village: a handful of houses without roofs on a hilltop, several of them destroyed. A few hundred meters away lie two Israeli settlements, one an industrial site and one a so-called outpost.

Three Palestinian boys walk through the land of Zuneta, with the illegal Israeli settlement industrial area of Metarim in the background

In Zuneta, Jara saw the remains of a destroyed school and witnessed IOF soldiers harassing residents.

A schoolbook lies in the dust of the destroyed school.

Shortly after their departure, the school was bulldozed. By whom? Nobody knows. We just know that the village is surrounded by settlers, and that there is one specific fanatic settler living close by that owns a bulldozer used for demolitions…

Zuneta is just one of many examples of Palestinian villages forcibly displaced by Israeli settlers and soldiers.
