Scenario :
On a Saturday morning in Hebron, 30 kilometers south of Jerusalem on the West Bank, a seven-year old Palestinian boy, who was approaching the Jewish entrance to the Cave of Patriachs, which is formally forbidden to Muslims, was killed by an Israeli settler. The murder provoked an international emotional wave and has put all eyes back on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
24 hours later, Hamas, in an apparent act of retaliation, launched rockets on the headquarters of the Israel Defense Forces in Tel-Aviv. For the first time since 2014, the Iron Dome, Israel's anti-missile defense system, was breached. The missiles destroyed the building as well as a neighbouring hospital, killing twelve civilians and five members of the IDF.
As a response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the order for an intensive airstrike campaign against Islamic Jihad and Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. In addition, Netanyahu also announced Operation “Defense for Peace” which is a massive ground campaign with the explicit goal of occupying the Gaza Strip. As Israeli tanks are on their way towards Gaza, the announcement of the ground operation has been firmly condemned by Iran and supported by the United States while the rest of the international community desperately calling for the deescalation of the conflict.
What will happen ? What decisions shall be made ? Will Operation "Defense for Peace" go as planned?
